So, I just watched all of Halo: Nightfall. My "Review" of it will be in the Spoilers bar below. If you haven't watched it, here's a link to it on YouTube. Be warned, the review touches on Halo 5. There's no major spoilers for 5, I just touch on it. If you consider what I say down there Spoilers for Halo 5 then you're a bitch. (Not really, I love you. But it's really not that bad.) Bitch.

So, I watched it as a sort of movie, not episodic. Thus, I will judge like such.
First of all, it's CGI was very eh. I didn't expect it to be great, but with it's low budget (film-wise), practical effects for the scenes with the Sangheili would have been harder, but much much cooler. I mean, that one alien at the beginning looked pretty cool. Why did the Elite have to look like it was animated in 2003? Practical effects FTW.
Next, I guess, the writing. It was pretty alright. I liked it better than Forward Unto Dawn, that's for fucking sure. But, it wasn't was well written as Hunt The Truth, an audio series you should listen to if you haven't already. The characters, especially later on, get kinda interesting. The whole turning on each other thing is a little done, and this wasn't good enough to make the premise better, but it wasn't the worse. Writing and characterization gets a 6/10.
The premise of the show. If you haven't seen Pitch Black, Nightfall will impress you. If you have, however, you'll get a little bored. "Sun will kill us! Time crunch! Pissed off aliens! Eh!" It's way too similar. However, for the Halo EU nerds like most of us here, the Hunter Worms were pretty fucking cool. Kinda interesting how they can mimic shapes, latch onto tech (Which, unless a further wiki search proves otherwise, will probably be why they dig that fucking armor), and SHRED motherfuckers. But, much like Halo 5 (which I won't explain), it was super brutal to casual fans who only play games. If you haven't read any books, then Nightfall will mean very little more than "Hey! It's the black guy from Halo 5... BEFORE HALO 5! Ew worms."
Cinematography: How they filmed it. Not as bad as I figured, not as good as I hoped. Some really shitty scenes scattered throughout the thing. Sometimes they got too lazy (Or broke) to render the Hunter Worms and had a zoom in of the C-List actors do their best dying face. I think the only decent one was the blonde girl. That one was well shot.
Wait, one thing. Why was it so hard to find a giant ass lizard in a shopping mall? If I saw humans with guns and a fucking ELITE, I'd be flipping shit. Even if that 7% of the planet consisted of a few elites, wouldn't one in Storm armor holding a ball be a little sketchy?
Oh yeah. Cinematography. Well, there's one really decent shot I can think of, and that's after the big betrayal, when the two group are running in different directions. Not only are they running opposite directions onscreen, but since one group is going uphill and the other downhill, they tilt the camera. Or maybe that was my brain bullshitting making the shot decent-er. I donno.
Okay. Let's talk about Locke. I won't delve into Halo 5's story AT ALL here. But, Locke is a boring asshole in it. As many fans assumed, Buck carried the team on his back personality-wise. (And if you're saying "Buck's there!? Spoiler!" Fuck off and watch the millions of ads they shoved down everyone's dickhole.) Locke had little more personality than "Move out, Osiris." Which is lame. He's lame. HOWEVER! In Nightfall, he was a fucking person, not a robot. It was cool! He had convictions! Personality! He was almost as fucking stubborn as an actual Spartan that matters! Here's my problem: Where the fuck did that go? I liked Nightfall Locke. I'd love to play as Nightfall Lock! But somewhere between being an ONI Agent and being a Spartan, he forgot how to be a decent character. And that's not something I can forgive.
So, if anything, Halo: Nightfall is about a 7/10 if I consider it Indie film, 5/10 if I consider it a full film, and 6/10 if I consider it a mini series. But, if I put it up against FUD, then it's a 10/10 because that movie/mini-series sucked. Fuck FUD.
Remember people: Stay critical. As gamers, we get to play art, and shitty art cannot be accepted. With things like Nightfall, shittyness is okay, I guess. I donno why, but these Halo Mini-Series things they keep doing are like retarded puppies to me. I can't make fun of it too much! It's just trying SO HARD!
