    Memento Mori.

Vance had been there for hours, just sitting on the barren hillside.

Soon, night came, with it, the bright stare of the moon. If anything, the meaning of the moon had never been for Vance. The glory of the provided night-light. The cycle and perfect distance to allow eclipses, all were meaningless to Vance because he lived there. But now, this stranger of a moon on this forested planet provided the wonder of nature he always imagined.

Victoria. His homage. Though his roots eventually date back to Earth, most of his linage was born here on both sides. But here he was, at a family plot outside of the small town.

"Dad. I'm so sorry. You were always there for me and I was always a total dick to you and you didn't deserve that. You didn't deserve me letting you be poor. You didn't deserve to fight against unfair odds without me. There aren't enough sorry's in the worlds to express my guilt, but your happy-ass would just accept one. I never did tell you about myself over the past decades. I have kids now. Audrey, William, and John. She's 22 and a fucking archaeologist; the boys are 17-year-old twins and have a new girlfriend every week. You'd like 'em, Will likes swords too, heh.

I retired when I got the news. I've just had enough of people dying. I've got so many battlescars and not one of them has faded. Last time we spent more than thirty seconds together, you gave me this, and you'll need it back. I also smuggled this out of ONI. We'll make a World War II out of ya."

Vance jammed the used, old machete into the ground, pulled up an old, blue Mk. VI helmet and placed it on top of the handle.

"Seeya starside, old man." Vance wiped a single tear from his eye as he walked away.
