Not gonna sugarcoat it, I kinda went on a huge journey/pilgrimage on other writing sites, and haven't been around here much lately. I really miss this place.

I don't write a whole bunch anymore, but the second I considered messing around with my Halo stuff, this place immediately came back to mind.

So, anyone up for a collab? I had a few ideas I wanted to toss around. :3

One of which involves a long-running plot. A "what if" story where the current generation of humans, with their current technology, had a war with the Prometheans of the past. Infinity, the Freelancers, and the Legion challenge the almighty power of the Promethean Knights.

Edit: Holy Fucking Shit. It's my 699th post.

    RADICAL.

    Back to my idea.

The humans are in a war of attrition against Forerunner forces, who are intent on the subjugation of humanity. To be fair, they don't wanna wipe us out entirely. Losing the war will result in the de-evolution of the species, and the imprisonment of its greatest minds within the Composer.

The Forerunner's greatest weapon against us is their Composer, which they've used to wipe entire planets out, and create an army of Promethean Knights. Leading those Knights are proper, home grown Prometheans, standing 11 feet tall, covered head to toe in armor, and with physical and mental capabilities on the battlefield that outstrip a spartan by a vast majority. They can slow their perception of time, much like Spartans, and battle while giving orders, effectively splitting their attention between at least ten different tasks with no sign of straining themselves. I Promethean General is pretty much a God.

Between their martial superiority, Battle Sphinxes, and the magnitude of their weaponry, the humans are fighting a hit and run war, desperately defending their planets.

OUR COMRADE HAS RETURNED TO THE MOTHERLAND! No but seriously, it's nice to have you back John. Although I've been kind on and off myself...

Anyways, about your plot...I assume that Humanity is going to lose that war? Or pull off some sort of movie-esque victory?

I mean, Humanity MIGHT be able to handle the Forerunner's allied Covenant fleets, but when the Forerunner ships coming knocking wouldn't it basically be game over? Unless a "Master Chief" is pulled off for each and every ship.

The Composer would also be analogous to the Covenant's Projector Beams, meaning that Humanity has no real planetary defence against it?

Something else of interest is... how many ACTUAL Forerunners are there? If they are few in number, then Humanity could stand a chance since the leadership of the Forerunner army would be very few in number. Take them out, and the Knights might not know what to do without them.

Another idea, if Humanity is supposed to win this war, is that a sympathetic Foreunner can "convert" Knights over to Humanity's side, much like the Librarian turned the Didact's Knight from his command (orange) to her's (blue).

Hm. I'd say the number of humans to forerunners is 5 to 1, but every organic Forerunner soldier is worth a squad of human, and Prometheans can render a firefight UNWINNABLE, and their weaponry and mechanical units make it easy to outnumber and overwhelm humans. Even in a naval engagement with one Forerunner destroyer versus ten human ships, the humans have a slim chance of victory.

The humans saving grace is the Infinity, and the Spartans.

Is that ratio total humans to total forerunners? Or the number of human soldiers to forerunner soldiers? Excluding the Knights of course.

If it's the former the Forerunners have enough organic soldiers to field a decent army. There are billions of humans, so then that would mean there are hundreds of thousands of Forerunners. If it's just soldiers, then the UNSC probably has tens of thousands (at least), meaning there would be somewhere around some multiple of 2000 organic Forerunners.

If Spartans and snipers (with gauss rifles) focus solely on Promethan generals, the rest of the infantry might have a slim chance. As for vehicles, I'm not too sure what would happen. I suppose that only the strongest of missile would be able to dent the armour those things have.

The REAL battle is in space however. If the Forerunners achieve orbital supremacy over a planet, it's game over. Then the just compose the population and be done with it, much in the same manner the Covenant would glass a planet and move on.

The Infinity, as you said, is the best chance but it would have to be used in hit and run tactics. Most likely via slipspace, since Humanity seems to have a better handle on it now.

BUT NO RAMMING. Forerunner armour is probably strong enough for the Infinity to end up harming itself on impact. MACs and nukes would have to be primary weapons, much like they were against the Covenant.

And the missiles? I'd assume they'd be little more the point defence, sent out to cause whatever the Forerunners classify as missiles to explode before they hit the ship.

All in all, it seems that Humanity should lose this fight. It's like 21rst century USA against colonial Britain.

However, since this is a story, we could pull off a "movie-esque" victory if you wanted to.

EDIT: Re-reading this, I can see how NationStates has changed me. I tend to factor in numbers, logistics, tactics, technology, and so on when thinking about battles now. Sorry if it comes off as annoying.

While orbital supremacy would likely DECIDE a battle for a planet, the Forerunners composing a planet fully would be hasty of them. Since their aim isn't the total eradication of humanity, they might occupy a planet and force its civilians into a state of martial law under them, composing them on a "draft" basis, and subjecting them to tests to view whether or not they're immune to certain strains of flood.

They'd get a more sustained rank of soldiers by "farming" the humans to make them the best possible composed knights they can be, and since human lives are a mere ninety years, and they'd need to only be about five to be composed and useful, the Forerunners, who live for Centuries, would have no real need to rush.

Concentration camps on a Planetary scale. The humans could try to launch ground campaigns to rescue people, since a planet is naturally huge, but orbital defenses, and the Forerunner's naval superiority makes that incredibly risky. The best the humans could do is deploy Pathfinder Spartans as spies to relay information.

Ground combat is POSSIBLE. One of our Spartans, given support, could wage a successful campaign, and possibly even defeat a Promethean, but if it came to ground combat on a human planet, it's possible that all is already lost, and they're just fighting to evacuate people and save them from the coming horrors of Forerunner Occupation.

That leaves Naval Battles as the only possible way to make any headway, and your assessment in that is correct. The Infinity, with support, would need hit and run tactics to win.

Perhaps the Librarian or Offensive Bias could side with the humans, or Forerunners could have a faction of human sympathizers. Or perhaps certain Covenant races could be in danger of Forerunner wrath.

Regardless of whether the Forerunners occupy the planet or simply compose everyone, it's still "game over" in a tactical sense. Control of the planet has been lost either way.

As for concentration camps, the hardest parts will be entry and extraction. The best way to get in will probably be ODST drop pods, with multiple "dummy" (empty) ones. The best way to get out is to create some kind of gap in the orbital defences for human ships to extract ground forces.

Throughout this conflict, the UNSC would probably have few allies. The Covenant races joining the UNSC is very unlikely.

The Forerunners are their GODS, and if someone who truly thought was God asked you to stand by them... would you really deny them (assuming you abide to a religion)?

The only members of Covenant client species that would join would be atheists, like Jul, and even then... would you really go up against an army that could crush you like a fly?

We may get a few supporters, most likely in the way of alien characters we've developed who have PERSONAL relations with the humans (and big balls).

The only other allies would be Forerunner defectors and the Insurrectionists. One would hope the Innies side with the UNSC if they realize the Forerunners are after ALL of Humanity. But, they weren't too smart during the Human-Covenant war... so who knows?

If Humanity is to have any chance at victory, they'd need to upgrade their tech. FAST.

Between the advances of Mjolnir, Spartan Augmentations, weaponry and ship building, mankind has made it clear that their tech has some SERIOUS Spiral Power.

I actually intend to give my Spartan some new weapons. A collapsible, plasma rifle-like repeater for an automatic, and a K-5 magnum that delivers slugs much harder. :3

And let's not forget Humanity's sheer will to survive. They've stood up to every other sentient species alone before. This threat is a bit more...Grimdark, but they can rise to the challenge.

In ground combat, it'll be Reach. A slow, steady loss, punctuated by successful counter attacks against an unstoppable cancer that blots out the sky.

Just going to throw this into the mix as well... Humanity has the Fist of Sparta. Perhaps Bailey could work on a potential Fist of Sparta on a massive scale to be used to destroy the Composer, along with potentially being used as a means of Orbital Defense platforms.

Gives us a reason to stall their assaults further, and allows us a chance to turn the tides on the mutated sons of bitches.

After seeing the Forerunners in action, it's pretty clear that those guys have destructive capabilities that trump the Fist. Even their energy shielding could be enough to render the FoS a moot point, since the energy it fires is entirely that, energy. It can be absorbed and dispersed.

If the enemy's shielding was dropped, the Fist could be used in naval combat with the effectiveness of a MAC slug, but a fully shielded Promethean could survive the shot, then summon more Knights to support him and counterattack.

Useful in ground combat against Knights, not so useful against shielded targets.

I'm going to make a topic, and a timeline for this. :3

While what you said is true, perhaps a plot element is that there could potentially be a chance that Bailey could construct something that could actually trump the Forerunner ships in Naval conflict. But perhaps she and a handful of the other of the UNSC's best were successfully captured and put into a concentration camp, where they would wait for indoctrination.

This would, in theory, give us a good rising conflict; in that we would need these people to launch an effective military resistance and potential victory over the Forerunners. Then, it would allow us to turn the tables, but being the hyper advanced species they are, perhaps the Forerunners could in fact retaliate with something new to counter our countermeasure.

It would provide a lengthy story, and for Agent Nine, it'd certainly be a strike close to home.

This is only a suggestion, however, this is your idea after all.

That'd make an interesting plot. The humans need to fight and win, or one of their best chances will be lost.

I like this idea... a lot.

It gives us an important military objective to achieve. It's also like the first main quest in an RPG, and there's thing we could do on the side before attempting to liberate them (i.e. rallying Covenant rebels to aid Humanity).
