Post  Bad John January 31st 2014, 5:28 pm

    July 4th, 2558
    Infinity, Deep Space.

In the medical bay, John, having slept in the chair beside one of the beds, remained seated.

His significant other, Lucy, laid asleep, a bandage wrapped around her right arm. She'd been badly hurt when a grenade burned her armor. Had she reacted a moment later, her limb may have been vaporized.

With Bailey missing, and no real signs of Lucy waking up from her painkiller induced sleep, John's world seemed a bit bleaker than usual. Still, he simply grinned, stroked her hair, and propped his feet onto a small table in front of him. Even with her brain addled by medication, she'd still managed to best him in chess.

I wish I could say I was going easy, but we both know that's bullshit. John chortled, and shifted, adjusting his sunglasses.

    "Hey. Four-eyed asshat."

John, recognizing the "nickname", and the surly female voice, looked up to see Maura. Like John, she was in uniform, her armor's colors lightly touched onto the typical black suit. She'd tied up her hair, oddly. "Can I help you?" John trilled in response.

"We've got a briefing. Lord Law wants to see a bunch of us. Personally. If you picked up your communicator, you'd know. I figured you wouldn't."

John waved his hand. "Whatever, lesbo," he stood, rolling his shoulders to drain the sleep out of his system. "...This better not take too-"

"They're bringing in Boss Linda and Jorge too. And the Chief, and Palmer. It's something fucking BIG."

"Well shit. Did Law build some sort of anti-son-of-a-bitch machine or something?" John, actually surprised, looked at Maura with true curiosity. "Seriously, who else-"

"I hear it's about Bailey's disappearance." Maura interjected. "Not sure, but I asked Miller, since he works communications. He says that she might be alive."

From the beginning, John knew something was up, but this revelation floored him completely.

John grabbed a sheet of paper and scribbled on it, stuffing it into Lucy's pillow. "C'mon. I want to be the first one there." The Spartan took off his hat, and grabbed a comb to fix his hair.

"You think Law will mind you wearing those dumbass sunglasses, four-eyes?" Maura leaned on the doorway as John brushed past her.

"Sorry Maura. Couldn't hear you over the constant droning of 'bitch'."

Maura gave Lucy one last, sad look. "Sorry you ain't coming, princess." With that, Maura turned, and followed John out and towards the briefing.

"Sir, I don't think you need to call in so many people. Send in a Legion strike force, we'll get it done," Manuel protested, as War merely sat there in thought. His black armoured general stood there confident in his decision, the light shining off it adding to the effect.

War admired his loyalty to the Legion, but alas the Legion was no more. It had evolved into something greater, something where War was the leader of HUMANITY. War feared this would happen since his Legionnaires did not, as they say, "play well with others". Thankfully his new training standards were meant to phase out "softer" soldiers, but until the older generations of soldiers retired or died... his Legionnaires would have to learn how to cooperate.

"While I have no doubts about that, I feel that the Freelancers will fight harder to save their mother figure, don't you think?" War replied, sitting back in his chair. He adjusted his military uniform, which was black and decorated with a golden trim around the edges.

"Sir, Legionnaires are willing to die if necessary. I just don't want them hiding anything from us," Manuel responded. War smiled, aware of who "them" were. The former UNSC and the Freelancers. What Manuel needed to understand was that they were one now.

"General, we are one organization now and we have no need to keep secrets from each other. Humanity is at stake here. Being its guardians is what we were born to do. The former UNSC and Freelancers realized that the Legion was best suited when I came to power.

However, if I keep assigning all the important missions to the Legionary unit, they will not trust me," War explained. Manuel stood there, uncomfortable with the situation. He wanted it done right, and to do that he needed to go with a team of Legionnaires. Despite having merged into one organization Manuel was convinced that the Legion, now called the Legionary guard, was the only one able to properly handle these situations. After all, they had had the right attitude from the start. War seemed to sense his general's discomfort, and set about to reassure him.

"I do not plan to lose such vital information, which is why I chose among the best soldiers the UNSC and the Freelancers had. Besides, the less Legionnaires dead, the more available later in this war," Manuel simply shook his head. This wasn't about numbers.

"Sir, with all due respect, the numbers are irrelevant now. The new Spartan V program will allow us to produce even more soldiers than before. The first group is almost done training," War simply looked at Manuel with a curious gaze. It was unusual for his general to question him, much less protest. Unfortunately he could not see his general's expression through the red visor.

"General-324, while I AM aware that proper Legionnaires are on their way that is no reason to hastily send in Legionnaires when we have other resources. Besides, you are to be sent in to oversee the entire operation. I trust you won't let me down?" War asked.

"No sir, I'll get the job done no matter the cost. You know that. You also know our fighting style does bring about inner conflict, something that we do not need, not on a mission as important as this. I am trying to make this be as simple as possible," Manuel replied. The two gentlemen looked at each other for a few seconds. Despite their words being calm and respectful, Manuel's insistence made his position quite clear. War sighed.

"General... you are in charge of this mission, and you will see it done. No matter the circumstances. Is that clear?" War said, thrusting his finger into Manuel's chest. He'd let his general talk enough, and he didn't need any arguments when those whom were invited walked in. It would make him appear weak. Manuel simply looked at him, his red visor revealing nothing.

"Yes sir," Manuel replied neutrally, as the doors slid open.

Amongst the clanking and grunting of the workout room, Vance was the most noticeable there. Son of a prominent Spartan II and experiment for further second generation augmentations, he was easily doing the more impressive workouts.

Rock came up to The Lancer,  who was quickly pumping up and down, arms cemented to the bar as he breathed heavily. "Vance, there is a briefing we need to attend." The big, bald, British man said to no effect. He looked down at his skin tight black gel-layer from his suit covering his body and wiped a small smudge on the breast of it.

"Vance." Rock poked Vance in the side hard enough to make him wince and hop down.

"What? What the fuck do you want?" Vance asked aggressively and almost loud enough to be a yell.

"Meeting. We're going. Now. We have a mission to attend soon." Rock grabbed Vance's shoulder and pulled him away from where the Spartan was working out. He could smell the hours of frustrated workout stench on Vance.

"Fine. Jesus. What's it even about?" Vance question, pushing Rock's arm off of him as the exited the room and proceeded down the hall. A woman in casual military uniform walked past, quickly looking at Vance and turning away pretending to be checking her pocket. With this, Vance noticed he wasn't wearing militant attire with his all black sleeveless workout shirt and gym shorts, he'd stick out.

"Don't know. I hope it has to do with Bailey's disappearance, but all I know is that Lord Law will be attending if not conducting the briefing." Rock stated, slapping the distracted Vance upside his head when they passed up the door to the women's locker room while a young soldier exited through the door.

"Fuck!" Vance yelped quickly in respond to the hit. "You sure it's about Bailey? My UpperCut model needs tuning. Every fight I get in, a piece of my armor comes off, and she's the only one who I trust to give me an upgrade." Vance bitched with a rushed, annoyed tone.

"And you miss her." Rock added with a smile.

"That too. But I'll be pissed if this is just Law coming up with new ways to drown puppies or something like that for an hour." Vance crossed his arms and grumbled as they drew closer to the briefing room.

"Mind yourself in there." Rock stopped, glaring at Vance and pointing to the door. "I don't need you getting killed in there or taken off the mission. Just shut up until the briefing is done. They ask for comments, stay silent." Rock finished with two light pats to Vance's cheek, like he was a child, and turned towards the the briefing room, a few soldiers waking into the room before them.

The door crisply opened to the room. John and Maura entered, and moved to the wall furthest from Lord Law. They both snapped to attention, standing with their shoulders square.

The two Spartans remained perfectly still, and John spoke. "Lord Law. You wanted to see us?"

Maura followed up John's statement. "Forgive me for indulging and breathing life into rumors, sirs, but I heard that this mission might involve the retrieval of Doctor Bailey." Maura couldn't hold back the question. "...Could you tell us whether or not this is true?"

John nodded in ascent, smiling morosely. "We're...invested in that subject, as you likely understand."

"Oye, either of you delinquents seen my son around anywhere?" Morgan growled, stumbling into the room. "Ain't seen him fer days now."

"That's 'cause he went on a mission with Doctor Bailey, gramps." Josh scoffed.

"Both of you shut the hell up." Phil said, Darryl and Scott stopping their brief game of poker to listen to Phil's datapad.

"Gentlemen under Admiral Blaine's command. There will be a briefing within the War room that I, Walter A. Law, will be attending personally. It's a matter of great urgency. We're waiting on you."

Phil, Josh, Scott, and Darryl all briefly glanced at one another, before simultaneously staring back down at the datapad. Then, all eyes turned to Morgan, who stood for a moment in silence and thought, before returning a glance back to all of the others.

"That's never a good sign." Morgan grimaced. "I don't care for that hooligan Law, but if it involves my boyo, you'd better believe we're gonna be there to help him out!"

"What about me, huh?" Darryl shook his head with a smug grin. "I am his younger step-brother."

"Shut the fuck up, boyo. This ain't the time to be a smartass, even if you are a Harlowe, whippersnapper!" Morgan fumed. "Well? WHAT THE HELL ARE YE WAITIN' FER! GET YER LAZY ARSES MOVIN'!"

Seemingly afraid of the Spartan IV, the only Spartan II in the room was the first to flee the angered old Scotsman, the other three IV's right on his tail. Morgan reached for his Assault Rifle from the nearby locker, before smacking a fresh clip into the chamber.

"Nobody fucks with my family, not even these god damned high tech alien bastards. If what I fear is true-" clenching his teeth together, he hissed with venom as he thought of Blaine being captured. "I'll kill 'em all, an' drink my Scotch from their bloody, fuckin' skulls."

With that, Morgan charged down the hall after the others towards the War room, where everyone else was waiting for them.

Rifle shots echoed all along the range. A single soldier stood in one of the stalls firing shot after shot off at the farthest targets in the rage. Every now and again he would lower his weapon and grab a set of binoculars on the table in front of him to check his shots. He seemed overly please with the results most of the time, but that didn't do much to stop him from continuing. Grabbing a magazine from the table, he loaded up his DMR and proceeded to fire off the clip at targets of varying distances.

His black ODST armour had a slight sheen to it as the muzzle flashes illuminated everything in the stall. From behind a sailor walked up to the range stall, holding back until the ODST had finished firing his latest magazine. Taking advantage of his pause, he strode forward.

"Lieutenant?" He got no response. Raising his voice he gave a dull yell. "Lieutenant!?" This time the soldier turned and removed his earplugs.

"Yeah, what do you need son?"

"Lieutenant Zach Crabtree, 7th ODST?" He responded. The Lieutenant's had gaze seemed to cut right through the sailor, staring into his very soul.

"That's me. Now, what's going on here son?"

"There's a meeting, being held by Lord Law, in the war room now. Something big is going on and he's requested quite a few big shots to see that it gets accomplished."

"So why does this involve me? Surely if War wants something big done he'll use his Legionnaires or Manny. Dude always gets his job done....always. If he really wants it done quick, and done right, he'll probably turn to any number of Blaine, John and the others."

"Negative sir" The sailor replied. "He's called together a fair few men and women to complete this OP. You're one. I'm on strict orders sir. Get your ass to the War room immediately."

Zack looked at the sailor and back over to the range. Reaching over he grabbed his helmet from the table and held it by his side. "Right, I don't need an escort son, you did your job well, you're dismissed." Finishing he strode in the direction of the War room. "Whatever this is, War must have some ace up his sleeve..."

He arrived a few minutes later. Stepping inside, he saw a fair number of familiar faces. "John and Manny, and a few others. Man, this must be serious" he mumbled to himself. Stopping directly in front of war he clicked his heels together, and popped a quick salute. "Lord Law, LT Crabtree, reporting as ordered."

    Post  Manny February 3rd 2014, 5:34 pm

War smiled as the various soldiers walked in, pleased that everybody was assembling fairly quickly. Then again, it wasn't a good idea to keep the leader of Humanity waiting.

"At ease Lieutenant," War said, motioning for the ODST to find a place within the room. As he did so, the final batch of soldiers walked in: Linda-05, Jorge-052, Spartan IV Commander Palmer, and John-117, better known as "The Master Chief". War stood up, as a screen lowered behind him.

"Now that we are all assembled, I will answer a question I previously chose to ignore," War said, looking at Maura.

"Freelancer Agent Seven previously asked me, for those who were absent at the time, if the rumours about this mission possibly involving the retrieval of Doctor Bailey, and Blaine-115," War added, looking at Morgan, "were true or not,"

War paused for a moment, gazing at the soldiers assembled.

"That statement, as worded, is correct" War replied. He could see the Freelancers and Admiral 115's men smiling. He decided to dispel any illusions they may have.

"This mission might involve the retrieval of the Doctor and the Admiral, it may involve the retrieval of just one of them, or it may not involve their retrieval at all. What is certain, is that this mission involves the retrieval of Doctor Bailey's work regarding a recent discovery she made on Reach. One that would provide Humanity with a crucial advantage in this war," War said, driving home the point that all else was secondary relative to Bailey's discovery. Before War could speak again, Commander Palmer interrupted him, much to War's annoyance.

"Sorry sir, but are you suggesting we leave our own behind? They've both done a lot for Humanity... I'd like to think they've earned a bit of respect. Enough to retrieve them," Before War could reply, his general cut him off.

"Show them the message, sir. They may be willing to listen if it isn't coming out of our mouths,"

War looked at his general for a brief second, before deciding to let the interruption go.

"Legionary General 324 you raise a fine point. Very well then, I will play the message, for those of you who believe I may have a personal agenda or am simply cold-hearted," War said, as Manuel grabbed a small remote from War's desk and hit a button. In less than a second, Doctor Bailey's voice filled the room and the words were shown as text on the screen.

    Bailey's Message
    "To those it may concern,

I, Doctor Billy-Jean Bailey, am trapped on Planet Reach. It is clearly no secret that military occupation by our enemy, the Prometheans, has occurred.

I am by no means asking for personal rescue. It is a damn shame that my capture dragged Admiral Blaine 115 down with me, but our lives are of little consequence to the gravity of my discovery. Against military advisory, several of my colleagues have been making attempts to correspond with the Lifeworkers on Ganymede regarding discoveries made on Earth, Reach, and in the stars themselves.

The Lifeworkers have allowed me to speak with their leader, the Librarian, at great length. I wish Dr. Halsey had been here. Her mind is greater than mine in a lot of ways. She would have made the discovery I'm so desperately clawing at now in a heartbeat.

The Librarian believes that there is a way to neutralize the Promethean threat. Not only a weapon, but a HOME. A mobile fortress somewhere in our galaxy that can stop the Prometheans. We could use it to fight them back on a scale so grand that it would make them FEAR us for the very first time.

I was so goddamned close, when they arrived. Blaine was willing to stay and see my discovery through.

I promise you, I can get the job done. I will use the knowledge given to me to PINPOINT the location of the device, or fortress, or weapon, that can save us from the Forerunners.

I'm not asking you to find me. Send a team to find my work. Even if the Prometheans find where I'm hiding, I'll hide my work and let them kill me. But this is humanity's last hope.

To my Spartans...John, Lucy, Maura, Mark, Billy, Creed, Victor, Zimm, Lilah, Penny...even the new ones in my little Freelancer flock...

I know I won't be able to talk you out of coming for be, but if I'm gone when you get here, don't try to get even. Just keep making me PROUD."

As soon as the last word was done, the screen went black, and Bailey's voice was replaced by War's.

"The distress beacon was sent from this location on Reach," War said, as the screen zoomed in on an iconic ONI base: Sword Base.

"However, due to various calculations done by the communications department, we have reason to believe the message came from underneath the surface. You have been selected to infiltrate Sword Base, find a way underground, and recover Doctor Bailey's work. You will be dropped off about a kilometre east of the base, and picked up a kilometre west from the base," The screen highlighted the two areas in red.

"Leading this operation is Legionary General 324, whom has direct control over any and all personnel involved.

After this briefing, it is highly recommended you head to the armoury as armoury personnel have been cleared to give this team whatever is deemed necessary.

Then I expect all of you to be aboard the new stealth Pelicans in hangar A at 2000 hours, which gives you exactly four hours from now to prepare," War ordered, before taking a seat again. He then gave the soldiers one last look before asking,

    "Any questions?"

John's fists were clenched incredibly tight, unsure what to say. Maura's head was lowered, her brow furrowed. Her teeth dug into her lip, instants from drawing blood. Linda could feel them both shaking through the vibrations in the floor. As a practitioner of Zen, she could tell that both of them had a very bad energy.

    Just keep making me PROUD.

Linda turned to both of them.

"...Agents Nine and Seven..." Linda brushed off her natural Spartan awkwardness for a moment. "...John. Maura. I know what this means to you, but are you sure that you want to come?" Linda turned to Jorge for support, who kept his head lowered.

Instead, the Chief himself spoke up, in a rare moment of vocal initiative. "It's not what she would have wanted, Spartan."

John nodded, as did Maura. Both of them were set on going, come hell or high water. John turned to his senior officers. "We will preform our duty to our utmost, SIR." He saluted crisply, his chin up. "If Doctor Bailey cannot be found...we will respect the terms of the mission, and collect her data, SIR."

"...You're fucking right we will..." Maura saluted as well, grumbling under her breath. "We're going to go whether it's to bring her back, or bury her. It's what she deserves."

The both of them turned back towards War silently, the Freelancer's deliberations finished. Linda spoke up. "Those of us in attendance, along with Vance and Rock, are some of the Freelancers top combatants. Our secondary Rifleman, Spartan Lucy, is incapacitated, unfortunately, but we should suffice."

Zack looked around the room and saw just how high the tensions grew. His eyes caught a glimpse of John and Maura, both of whom seemed extremely agitated. Gazing over he looked at the anticipation in the eyes of Blaine's troops. Drowning out the world around him, he soon became lost in his own thoughts.

"Everyone here has some stake in this operation," he thought. "But why am I here." He looked up at War, sitting comfortably with Manny by his side. "He knows something alright, something he ain't exactly telling." He hadn't thought of making his concerns noted until he had heard the entire brief. He'd worked with Spartans and other high value assets before, even some of the Spartans in the room, but only on operations he had volunteered for.

"John and Maura would love nothing more than to retrieve Dr. Bailey, and Blaine's crew wants him back here." He racked his brain with what possible reason War could have asked for him so specifically.

"Those of us in attendance, along with Vance and Rock, are some of the Freelancers top combatants. Our secondary Rifleman, Spartan Lucy, is incapacitated, unfortunately, but we should suffice." He heard John say as he brought himself back to reality. Finally, having enough of guessing he spoke up.

"With all do respect sir, looking around the room I can clearly see why you have chosen most of the members for this operation. My mind, however, cannot fathom why you would request myself for such an operation of such grave importance." He paused momentarily and then continued.

"While my skill set does put me above most average ODSTs,and my track record surely doesn't allude to myself becoming a threat to this operation, I am questioning your motives here sir. Is this some form of test, to see just how well ordinary UNSC soldiers will work under Legion command, or is there something else you're hiding? With all due respect sir." His questions were very brief and very formal, just the way he liked to operate.

    Post  Manny February 7th 2014, 5:14 pm

As soon as the words came out of the lieutenants mouth Manuel got up, having previously been leaning on the wall. He was ready to "escort" the ODST out of the room, for even questioning War's motives. To be chosen for this mission, and not be a Spartan, was a honour. Before the Spartan could take one step, War raised his hand as if to tell Manuel that he would handle the situation. Manuel went back to his spot on the wall, eyes on the ODST at all times.

"Lieutenant, you wound me with your words!" War said, approaching the general. When he was about arm's length away he stopped.

"We are Ausdauer Wille, all of us. There is no UNSC, no Legion, and no Freelancers. While the Freelancer and the Legion may be their own units, they are still under the command of the highest officials in Ausdauer Wille and will act as such. This is not a test, in any way, to test UNSC soldiers as there are no UNSC soldiers," War answered, his tone becoming much more serious and the intensity of his red eyes increasing. What had seemed to be message of unity was only meant to drive home the point that War was in charge, and that insubordination was unacceptable.

"However, if you are so curious to know you can ask Legionary General 324 along the way. In fact, any other questions can be directed towards him. Now, we've spent enough time talking and I have a meeting with ONI officials to attend. Dismissed," War said, gesturing towards the door. One by one the soldiers filed out, Crabtree and Manuel-324 being the last two to do so. As they walked out into the hallway, the door leading to War's office closed.

Manuel began to make his way to the armoury, Crabtree following him. Before the ODST could ask his question again, Manuel decided to answer.

"You weren't far off Lieutenant. This isn't a test of UNSC soldiers, but rather of you. We have something... 'special' planned out for you. If you do well this mission, consider it... a promotion," Manuel said, scanning his hand on the panel, and then typing in a code to get into the armoury.

John mulled over the meeting in his head. Maura had immediately stormed off ahead of him, but he was trying to calm himself. He would need to abate Maura's anger as well, but for now it was hard enough to get himself back into working order.

    "Spartan John."

A rugged voice stopped John as he walked, and he turned back. Chief beckoned for him to approach. Linda leaned against the wall not far away.

John pulled out his hat, and put it on, stuffing his hands into his pockets as he approached. Chief looked down at him. "I was assigned to the job, but Linda wants you as her Secondary Rifleman for this mission."

The Spartan III, not expecting the weird turn, bawked. "What? Why the hell are you telling ME to do this?" He felt oddly cornered by the pair of them, as Linda circled around to him. He shifted his gaze to her, as she stood to his right, looming over him. She spoke quietly, putting a hand on his shoulder.

"Your wife is one of the best sharpshooters in the UNSC, but we can't exactly pull her from the hospital. If you have even half of her TECHNICAL knowledge, then we can count on you." Linda's hand squeezed slightly, then lightened. "Like I said back there, I know what this mission means to the two of you. The other members or Whiskey Company are in knots about sending you and Maura down there." Linda leaned forward, nearly forehead to forehead with the younger man. "I need you to keep it together. This mission is life or death for us. I know if a Knight catches you sniping out there, you can handle it alone."

"PLUS." Cortana suddenly chirped from Chief's helmet, startling the three of them. "When we find Doctor Bailey, we can't have you killing her with a Mjolnir powered hug." John seemed to cheer up a bit at that. "Tell Maura that Bailey was with Admiral Blaine. He'd keep her safe."

John, with a restored sense of purpose and drive, saluted the two Spartan IIs, and the A.I. Cortana, as the A.I. continued speaking. "Wille was founded on four words. Let's do it together. None of us could face a Promethean alone. "*So let's gang up on 'em and take something back for once.*"

Vance yawed as he exited the briefing room, Rock walking beside him with his hand on his shoulder.

"Good job shutting it." Rock said casually as he walked alongside his apprentice, witnessing the conversation down the hall from them.

"What're they talking about over there?" Vance asked, completely disregarding Rock's comment. And, without waiting for a response from Rock, Vance marched over to the conversation and began listening in.

"Exactly what would it take to kill a Promethean, exactly? Uh... Ma'am." Vance added in the respectful suffix last second.

"A test for me?! General, sir I don't quite under-" Zack started to say, but by the time he looked up, General 324 was gone, moving ahead into the armory. Even though his question hadn't been fully answered he gave a satisfactory little smirk.

"War you clever little bastard," he said to himself. "I knew there was some kind of catch to this whole ordeal. Oh well, I'll do my duty without questions, and preform to my best." Picking up his pace to that of a slow jog, he moved towards the armoury. "Save some explosives for me!"

Chief, housing Cortana, turned to allow the AI a view of Vance. "Well, that's simple, Spartan." Cortana chirped grimly. "It isn't easy. Overwhelming force, and luck are the only way to put them down. We know from experience."

Chief grunted in ascent. "It takes a hell of a lot of firepower just to breach their orbitar shields. Even then, they've still got the conventional shielding of two chieftains. Break their shielding, and bury them in enough firepower to bring down a God."

John, a bit disconcerted, patted his fist against his palm. "Would a knife to the base of the skull work? They're mortal just like anything else."

Linda shifted her weight, putting a hand on her hip as she turned to answer the shorter Spartan. "A Spartan is mortal too. And you know damn well how tough we are to kill. Prometheans are slower, but they're bigger, think faster, and have tech on their side." Every word regarding the Prometheans practically dripped with dread and hatred. "If we see a Promethean, our best bet is to catch it by surprise and deal a killing blow with an antimaterial rifle, or at very least wound it."

Chief waved his arm. "Enough talk. Let's get suited up."

Chief led the way, and the group followed him towards the Armory.

Alone in her corner of the armory, ignoring the others present, Maura sat on a bench in front of a large rack of weapons, having selected her personal primary weapon. The Spartan polished her grenade launcher, stopping to inspect the trigger and loading mechanism. She'd painted a shark face on the muzzle, to John's constant amusement. She turned to Jorge, who was looming cautiously over her shoulder.

"Need something, Captain Bear?" She smirked at him, then returned to her inspection of her weapon.

"I just want to make sure your head is in the game. With Bailey on the line-"

Maura deadpanned, her face betraying no meaningful feeling. "She's either dead, or she's stuck on that planet. I'll react to the news when I know what it is." She turned towards Jorge. "Granted, I'm pissed. So is Four-Eyes. But it doesn't change much. We're gonna bury the Prometheans. They're just giving us another reason to be fucking pissed."

"That sounds like Legionnaire talk." Jorge folded his arms, looking down at Maura.

"Then maybe I should be a Legionnaire. I like their tactics better anyway. Aggression against aggressors. None of our usual bullshit 'love and peace' garbage." Maura inspected her sidearm, disassembling the slide on the handgun. She put it back together, and tied back her hair. "Basically? Fuck the Prometheans. We're gonna burn every last one of them, and take back my Mom. Dead or alive."

Jorge patted Maura on the head with his tough, leathery mitt. "Nice to see you're in the game then."

Present of Future End (Collaborative Universe) Empty Re: Present of Future End (Collaborative Universe)

    Post  Manny February 22nd 2014, 11:53 pm

Manuel walked into the large armoury, admiring the plethora of weapons and equipment. The layout was fairly simple, with smaller firearms being on his right and larger weaponry on his left. In many ways it reminded Manuel of the base where he was raised so many years ago.

Of course, there were differences as well. The first difference he noticed was the quartermaster's area in the middle of the back wall. The biggest difference however was the actual weapons themselves.

Almost everything in the armoury was new or improved technology, many of the guns from 2552 phased out of service. Of course, some of their successors were fairly similar to the older models but that was mostly to ease the UNSC into the new tech. When the Legion came to power, they had a lot of classified tech that then was shared with the UNSC, which were the models that resembled their predecessors. When "Wille" was formed, the brightest minds came together to push these advances even further resulting in a new era of equipment, many of which barely looked like the UNSC's equipment of 2552.

As he admired Humanity's progress in the field of warfare, he reached the young quartermaster, who was ready to issue whatever he may need.

"Legionary General 324!" The young quartermaster saluted, his green eyes wide in surprise. It was a rare occurance for the Legionary General to appear in the armoury. His choice of weapons had remained fairly static throughout the years, with any major improvements done in private by him and Legionary scientists. Today however, he needed some extra equipment.

"At ease Quartermaster...," Manuel looked for the man's golden name tag, which was fairly easy to find against his black uniform. The Spartan found it in no time at all, addressing the soldier once more.

"Williams," Manuel finished. Williams nodded in response, putting his hand down. Manuel merely observed the equipment behind Williams' back.

"...Is there anything I can help you with?" Williams asked after a few awkward moments of silence.

"Yes. I'll need shield layering, level seven to be exact," Manuel replied. The quartermaster whistled in response.

"Councilor level?" Williams asked, referring to the more common, and informal, shielding levels. UNSC personnel usually referred to shield strength in terms of Sangheili ranks, as that is what the various levels were based of. Manuel preferred the term "level seven" however.

    "Yes,"

"That's an awful lot of protection, what are you going up against?" Williams asked.

"Forerunners, as always. Mission details are classified, just get me my order" Manuel replied. Williams nodded and began collecting the requested items.

While the quartermaster was away, Manuel began to inspect his weapons. His hybrid rifle had been replaced by a hybrid of the newer models of assault rifle and battle rifles, and apart from that not much had changed. His pistol, or rather revolver, was another story. It had two barrels, and both utilized the same properties as the rail gun. Having two barrels allowed it to fire one while the other cooled down, giving it only a slightly slower fire rate than the average pistol.

Another unique feature of the recover was that the handle was wide, it needed to be due to the size of the ammunition. Within the handle was a large magazine split into two, to feed bullets into the two barrels. It was much faster than having to reload the cylinderical chamber of typical revolvers.

Manuel admired the weapon, holding it up to the lights to watch it reflect off the gun's onyx black paint. Manuel liked to keep his guns clean. Finally he put it away to inspect yet another weapon.

He pulled out a metal baton and pressed a button on its side. His energy trident extended, allowing the Spartan to observe it's blue glow. It had remained unchanged throughout the years, it's lethality hard to improve on. Against Forerunner Combat Skins however... Manuel had his doubts. Eventually he'd find out, and hopefully his concerns would be put to rest. If not, things may not turn out so well that day. As quickly as he had pulled it out, he put the trident away. As he did, he heard an interesting comment that made him smile.

"...a Legionnaire. I like their tactics anyways. Agression-"

"Sir?" The quartermaster's voice replied, drawing Manuel's attention away from the Freelancer's comment.

    "Is it ready?" Manuel asked.

"Yes sir. Please step into the armor configuration rig," the Quartermaster said, gesturing the the various machines in the middle.

"The one closest to you!" The quartermaster shouted as Manuel neared the machines. He stepped in, and after some spinning he was done.

"All set to go sir. Let's hope that shielding helps you get your job done!" Williams said, rather cheerfully.

"...Let's hope indeed," Manuel replied rather sombrely, turning around to leave the armoury. He had only a few more hours to prepare, and he hoped to oversee the preparation of the invasion force before they left.

Zack uneasily watch as his commander suited up for the operation.  High tech weaponry, enhanced shielding; Manuel wasn't taking any chances with this operation.  Shrugging off his uneasiness he looked towards the weapons that he had selected for the coming shit-storm.

"Years pass and warfare changes," he said to himself as he picked up his signature M7S from the table in front of him.  "But some things will always stay the same."  The signature ODST modified submachine gun had been his weapon of choice on every single operation he went on.  "Better pack the AP rounds for this one.  Something tells me shields will be the least of my worries."

Placing the weapon on his hip he grabbed several frag grenades from the table, and reached for his favorite weapon in the world.  His love of explosives made him very attached to his rocket launcher, and it had seen him through many a tough time.  Placing the weapon on his back, he grabbed a large military issue satchel.  Walking away from the table he passed John, Maura and Spartan-117, or Chief and walked over to Manny..  "So, Forerunners, a mission to rescue two HVT and some classified Intel, and a test for me. Well, I got enough explosives on me to blow a hole to fuckin' China three times over, so let's rock and roll," he said to Manuel, not stopping to talk.  In truth, he was extremely nervous about the whole operation, but should he fall, he was bound and determined to die in a mushroom cloud of death and destruction.

Present of Future End (Collaborative Universe) Empty Re: Present of Future End (Collaborative Universe)

Post  Bad John February 25th 2014, 12:12 am

John and Maura stepped into their armor stations. In moments, their streamlined, form fitting undersuits were knit over their uniforms. The actual armor came second, winding up and attaching to their chests and limbs.

Maura's suit finished first. An auburn suit, with a heavily modded JFO helmet, her suit had been painstakingly rebuilt after an explosives incident. She flexed her hands as the power came on. The addictive rush of mjolnir took to her nervous system. Her reaction speed, her strength, and her confidence were all boosted in her armor.

She turned towards her adoptive brother, who stepped off of his armor station. The color of his suit had been heavily altered. She scrutinized it for a moment. Only his forearms, shins, and boots, helmet, and their corresponding parts of his undersuit were their normal brown color. The rest was black. He looked at his armor, a bit confused as he took off his EVA helmet. "Did Bailey modify Overarrow? She couldn't have."

Chief, sporting his typical olive green, loomed over the smaller Spartan's shoulder. "Halsey did." Chief turned his head slightly, conferring with Cortana as he spoke to John. "She finished up a design Bailey had in mind. Cortana. Give the Captain the armor specs."

John put on his helmet. As his HUD came to life, the AI displayed a small schematic. "Your suit, as always, is built for close combat and mobility. You think faster than most Spartan IIIs, so you're one of our best bets to intercept or distract a Promethean unit. Your suit was modified with that in mind."

"So you pick the guy with the wife to run Promethean wrangling duty." His body language said it all, shoulders slumping and head rolling slightly. "Terrific."

"You expect US to throw our lives away?" Linda chuckled, not far away. "We all have productive jerking off to do." She sat on a bench, adjusting her sniper rifle's scope. She snapped off the safety, not needing it. "It won't come to that. Chief and Jorge will handle close quarters. You're our secondary rifleman. I have a weapon for you to use specifically."

The Freelancer leader stood, and pulled an odd looking weapon John had never had the pleasure of using. "A muzzled rail-gun. It runs silent, but the effects will make it pretty clear to the enemy that we're here. It's not normally used as a sniper, but it'll suit you. Just wait for my signal to fire."

The Spartan III recognized it as a railgun as Linda showed him how it worked. "The scope is smart linked to your HUD. You'll be shooting any heavily armored, or automated targets." She grabbed a belt of slugs for it off the rack. "Here." She attached the belt of ammunition around John's waist, as Maura snickered at the spectacle. "Don't move.

John squirmed away from Linda prodding and attaching slugs to his waist. It was a fairly awkward position, as if she was about to lead him in a waltz. "...LINDA. Stop. You're fuckin' embarrassing me." She pulled him in and attached the slugs. John frowned, glaring at her. "Goddammit."

"HAH!" John could hear Jorge burst with laughter as he inspected his cannon. Chief looked away, but everyone could tell he was snickering too, as Cortana whispered some mean spirited joke in his ear at John's expense. The Spartan III slumped, seeing his hero indulge in his mortification.

"Fuck you guys. Brutal fuckers." Decently humiliated, John went to the racks of weapons, and picked out a few things for himself. A folding, human built type-27 Plasma Rifle. A newer model, it sported the basic shape and size of a plasma rifle, but had a more powerful kick, and a reliable, human, steel chassis. His second selection was a super short barreled 12 gauge shotgun. The Spartan felt confident in his choices, putting away his weapons. He was armed to the teeth for this mission.

The Chief just grabbed his regular. A pistol, and his own assault rifle. He did, however, help himself to all the grenades he could carry. John watched with amusement as he paused, lifting one grenade, then checking the other, like a man comparing two apples. For some reason, Chief seemed to prefer one, and put the other away, plucking a few more.

"...Chief, what the fuck are you doing?" Maura looked at him, confused.

Chief gave Maura a stern look, and Maura lifted her hands defensively, a bit intimidated. "...WHAT? I'm just asking."

Chief relented, shrugging his shoulders. "I like the ones with the yellow markings on the pins." Chief grunted. John grabbed one and took a look. Indeed, some had yellow markings down the center of the pin, and some didn't.

"...Well I'll be. What're the markings for?" John asked, confused, but impressed with Chief's attention to detail.

Chief simply shrugged again, and tromped past the others to grab some more ammunition.

Moments after the armor station had settled from the ruckus, Darryl, Josh, Phil, Morgan, and Craig all took their turns into the machine. Their Mjolnir armor forming to them within a matter of minutes. With his heightened strength and reflexes, Morgan's fist lashed out towards his locker, denting the metal.

"Jeez louis old man!" the quartermaster growled. "Save your punching for the mutated sons of bitches trying to KILL US!"

"Git oot of my face, ye wee scunner!" Morgan barked, as the quartermaster backed away. "T'day ain't the day te fuck wit me, ye fuckstunt."

"Jesus, got a stick shoved up your ass today, gramps?" the quartermaster challenged, cowarding behind Darryl.

"No, ye fuckin' know-nothin'." Morgan shook his head, turning around. "Me son is down there. An' I have no way of tellin' if he's alive 'r not."

"Ah." the quartermaster nodded. "I've got just the thing for you. Fresh off the line."

The quartermaster disappeared from the room for a moment, giving the others a chance to stock up on their ammunition and grenades. Moments later, the man returned, a long rifle in his hands, brilliant pink needles on the back, another weapon on his back.

"This here is the Devastator." the quartermaster replied. "Smart-links to your HUD for maximum magnification of 40x. One shot on any part of the body of an un-shielded opponent is lethal, as the shot supercombines on impact. Semi-automatic fire reduces the needles' potency, but can take down a shielded opponent with two- to- three shots. Headshots could prove fatal, depending on the shield level of the target."

Handing the weapon to Morgan, the quartermaster turned towards Phil.

"As his spotter, you're going to need some firepower of your own," he replied, handing the weapon to Phil.

"Believe it or not, but with some of the Brutes help, and thanks to Humanity's technological advances, we've created a Brute Spiker sniper rifle. This weapon boasts a target locator function, which helps the spikes seek out your target, much like a needler. When a lock has been made, anyone with a sniper can work in conjunction with this weapon can have their bullets home in on the target as well."

Phil nodded curtly, as the quartermaster held up a hand, as if to say he wasn't finished.

"There is a problem, as this is a prototype, the smart lock does not seem to work for head shots, those you will have to use your own abilities to obtain. The smart lock functionality can work for the torso, or if you really wanna be cruel, the legs/nether regions. It holds four spikes per clip, the molten spikes enough to kill a shielded foe in at least two, so long as the shots are on the torso. Head shots are almost completely fatal, but the inaccuracy of the rifle without the smart lock makes it fairly difficult to accomplish."

Completely armed, Darryl, Josh, Phil, Morgan, and Craig followed the quartermaster to obtain their tiered shielding systems. As snipers, Morgan and Phil took Ranger-class shields, while Josh and Craig, acting as support, took Major-class shields. Darryl, who would most likely be up close and personal, alongside Jorge and the Chief, took General-class shields.

Double checking their gear, the five Spartans awaited, with some nerves, for the invasion to begin.
